Google's Bulk Sender Requirements (Feb 2024)

If you send 5,000+ emails/day to Gmail, you must meet these requirements:

SPF Authentication

Valid SPF record for sending domain

DKIM Signing

Emails signed with DKIM

DMARC Policy

At minimum p=none with reporting

One-Click Unsubscribe

List-Unsubscribe header required

Spam Rate < 0.3%

Monitor via Google Postmaster Tools

Valid PTR Records

Reverse DNS for sending IPs

Why Gmail Rejects Emails

550 5.7.26 - DMARC Authentication Failed

This error means neither SPF nor DKIM passed with alignment. The domain in your From header must match the domain that passed SPF (Return-Path) or DKIM (d= tag). Check your DMARC alignment.

550 5.7.1 - SPF/DKIM Failure

Your sending IP is not authorized in SPF, or DKIM signature is invalid. Verify your SPF includes all sending services and DKIM keys are correctly published. Check SPF | Check DKIM.

550 5.7.1 - IP Blacklisted

Your sending IP is on a blocklist. Google uses multiple reputation sources. Check your IP against major DNSBLs and request delisting. Check blacklist status.

421 4.7.0 - Rate Limited / Temporary Rejection

Gmail is temporarily rejecting due to sending volume or reputation issues. Slow down sending rate and check Google Postmaster Tools for reputation data.

High Spam Complaint Rate

If your spam rate exceeds 0.3% in Google Postmaster Tools, Gmail will start rejecting emails. Clean your list, improve content, and add easy unsubscribe options.

Missing One-Click Unsubscribe

Bulk senders must include List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers for one-click unsubscribe. This is mandatory for marketing emails to Gmail.

How to Fix Gmail Email Rejections

1

Check the Bounce Message

Gmail's error codes tell you exactly what failed. Look for 5.7.26 (DMARC), 5.7.1 (auth), or 4.7.0 (rate limit).

2

Verify SPF Alignment

Your Return-Path domain must match your From domain, or be a subdomain of it. Run SPF check.

3

Verify DKIM Alignment

The d= domain in your DKIM signature must match your From domain. Run DKIM check.

4

Publish DMARC Record

Add a DMARC record at _dmarc.yourdomain.com with at least p=none. Run DMARC check.

5

Check Google Postmaster Tools

Register your domain at postmaster.google.com to see spam rates and reputation.

6

Add One-Click Unsubscribe

For marketing emails, add List-Unsubscribe headers. Most ESPs do this automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Gmail rejecting my emails?

Gmail rejects emails due to missing SPF/DKIM/DMARC authentication, blacklisted IPs, high spam complaint rates, or failing to meet Google's bulk sender requirements introduced in February 2024.

What are Gmail's bulk sender requirements?

Senders of 5,000+ daily emails to Gmail must have SPF, DKIM, and DMARC (p=none minimum), one-click unsubscribe, spam rate under 0.3%, and valid PTR records for sending IPs.

How do I fix Gmail 550 5.7.26 errors?

Error 550 5.7.26 means DMARC authentication failed. Ensure SPF or DKIM passes AND aligns with your From domain. The domain in Return-Path or DKIM d= tag must match your From address domain.
